What is Special Education?

When a child is having trouble in school, it’s important to find out why. While not all school troubles are the result of disability, by law, schools must determine if this is the case. Schools must provide special help to eligible children with disabilities. This help is called special education and related services. There’s a lot to know about the process by which children are identified as having a disability and in need of special education and related services. If at any time you believe your student may need special education, contact Sarah Pearson, Prescott's Director of Special Education.

Who is eligible?
Special Education services are provided to eligible students ages birth – 21. Developmental screenings and/or comprehensive assessments for children who may have a disability that could adversely affect their educational development are available at no cost. Parent/Guardian Involvement
Prescott School District encourages parental involvement and the exchange of information so that we are able to provide appropriate services to students. Community Resources like the Walla Walla Valley Disability Network provide amazing support for families which include workshops, newsletters and great advice! See the the WWVDN Newsletters below!

Special Education Procedural Safeguard for Students and their Families
The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires schools to provide parents of a student who is eligible for or referred for special education with a notice containing a full explanation of the rights available. Below are the English and Spanish versions of these Procedural Safeguards
